Are white Shaker cabinets hard to keep clean?
While white cabinets can showcase dirt more readily, ours require minimal upkeep due to our use of Sherwin Williams 5-Step Finish, which provides excellent protection and easy cleaning. Most spills and smudges can be wiped clean with water alone. Harsh chemicals are unnecessary and can damage the finish.
For daily care, promptly address spills, splatters, or drips as soon as they happen, or at least before they dry. Dried-on messes might require more wetting and scrubbing but will still yield to water.
Regular cleaning involves a weekly damp cloth wipe-down. This removes dust and gives you a chance to notice any minor spills you may have missed. Avoid excessive water; a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. If the cabinets appear wet, dry them immediately with a soft towel.
Do white Shaker cabinets turn yellow?
While prolonged sun exposure can yellow lower-quality paints, the Sherwin Williams 5-Step Finish on our cabinets is designed to resist this discoloration. However, household activities can impact the cabinets’ appearance. Neglecting to clean cabinets allows dust and grease to accumulate, dulling the white finish over time. Smoking indoors accelerates this process, causing noticeable yellowing. While these issues can be addressed with thorough cleaning, removing years of nicotine residue may require extra effort.
Do white cabinets scratch easily?
Scratching easily is not an issue specific or intrinsic to white cabinets — it has more to do with the quality of materials that have gone into their construction. We use solid maple, maple plywood, and Sherwin Williams 5-Step Finish, all of which provide some resilience against scratching. Maple is a tough hardwood favored for cabinets due to its beauty and durability, while the Sherwin Williams finish provides immense protection against usage and the elements. However, it is not impossible to scratch our cabinets and you should still treat them like they are valuable to you. Normal kitchen rigors are fine (they are tough enough for that), but avoid carelessness or abuse.
Do white cabinets increase home value?
White Shaker cabinets can significantly enhance a home's value, as can most wooden cabinets. While Shaker designs are relatively simple, the use of high-quality wood and finish is crucial to their appeal. This simplicity also contributes to their timeless look, preventing them from appearing outdated. Wooden cabinets are a valuable asset in real estate, making them a sound investment for homeowners.
