Crown molding is the most classic and sophisticated method to finish the tops of wall cabinets. It can be installed flush to the ceiling or with a gap (leaving an air soffit) depending on the desired look. Installing it flush to the ceiling creates an appealing transition between the surfaces, while a gap usually serves the purpose of allowing lighting over the wall cabinetry.
